About

During the pursuit of her master’s degree, Laurel introduced the concept of “active paint”. She coined this term to convey the sensation of vitality emanating from paint work even when depicting inanimate subjects. Whether through scrapes, drags, layering, drips or thick blobs, any element highlighting the process of painting, the artists engagement with the medium and the physicality of the artwork qualifies as “active paint”. Today her artistic endeavours continue to revolve around this principle, as she harnesses the emotive force of nature to captivate viewers through her brushwork.

“I want my viewers to find things for themselves in my paintings. Maybe it is something in the tones, textures or colours that set alive a memory or feeling. Perhaps it is something in the animal that brings them a reminder of their own human experiences.

I then also intend for the traces of my own interaction with the canvas to act as a connector to the viewer. Scrapes, drags, wobbly lines, small amounts of clumsiness and human error.  My hope is it is all of those imperfections and human things that will make my paintings relatable and make it possible for the viewer to connect to me and my work in a very genuine way. They aren’t just paintings of animals they are paintings of me too as a creator and sentient being”
